Alternative approach to MAI and Bronchiectasis

Hi - after treating MAI for a year with the big 3 (azithromycin, rifampin, ethambutol) with no improvement, we essentially doubled the dosage + used Amikacin via nebulizer (after a visit to National Jewish Health). Over a year later, the MAI was gone - hooray - and I went off the meds. Then, last year, I contracted pneumonia twice and, in December, the MAI reappeared. I'm back on the big 3 (not yet Amikacin) and will continue for a year. HOWEVER, at this point, I'm looking at alternatives (in addition to healthy eating, exercise, etc.). Any suggestions? People have recommended: vitamin D supplements, Bacteril, even colloidal silver! I would really welcome opinions as to whether any alternative approaches are useful. Thanks so much?

Hello! I am sorry that you are dealing with a reoccurrence. Have you read Insight, the Patient Manual, page 22? https://www.ntminfo.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/englishpamphlet_ntminfo.pdf

I looked into colloidal silver years ago; I was informed that it can turn your skin blue?

Vitamin D is strongly recommended.

I am not familiar with Bacteril.

Alternative options work for some, not for everyone. These methods do relax the mind which in turn can improve your overall health.

Hi mcthom,

I have not heard of any alternative treatment approaches, unfortunately. You mention exercise and healthy eating...does your etc. include lung clearance and cutting down on exposure to possible sources of MAI? These are both things that I am starting to get more serious about. I hope your current treatment is successful!!

A few things I do are. I filter my water for drinking or cooking then I boil it. I have removed the mesh filter from inside my kettle and taps. My plumbing pipes are good, however I don’t put my face in water. If I was to go away somewhere I wear a N95 mask while showering. I turn up my hot water service to maximum. I don’t go in indoor pools at all. In fact I don’t go swimming at all. I wear a mask when gardening or using chemicals. Rarely go to large indoor shopping centers. Avoid airborne dust where possible. Probably sounds a little excessive ...... actually I’m told it is by my peers. My Abscessus treatment was hard as they all are I assume. I don’t ever want to go back there, so for me prevention will always be better than cure.

LeaPea,

I agree wholeheartedly with your final words- “ I don’t ever want to go back there”!. We must do everything possible to prevent recurrence. All your tips are great. It takes time to become fully compliant; it sure is worth working on being fully compliant
