Are you on a probiotic? Which ones are best?

I've read that some probiotics are better than others for dealing with side effects from antibiotics. What have your doctors recommended?

Have you noticed much improvement in side effects when you take a probiotic?

Tomorrow's the day I see my doc to discuss NTM treatment.

I hope your appointment goes well and you receive the information you need. Let us know!
I do not have any experience with probiotics but I am sure some of our other participants will chime in with theirs!

Hello Merry, When I took the prescribed antibiotic, My doctor didn't prescribed probiotic. I read from the internet that probiotic can reduce the risk of having diarrhea in people with antibiotic treatment.

https://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/ive-been-pres...

There must be so many brands of probiotic supplements. I read from another bronchiectasis forum, some people choose the supplement that has acidophilus in it.

I hope the doctor visit will go well Merry, have a nice day :)

hello! You must wait 3-4 hours after taking antibiotics to take probiotics. Make sure you gett live probiotics. Gut health is so important while and after being on antibiotics for an extended period

This came out just the other day.

Probiotic supplementation affects pulmonary exacerbations in patients with lung disease - http://bit.ly/28PdfBW
PFWarrior's insight:
Probiotics reduce pulmonary exacerbations rate in patients with CF. Probiotics may have a preventive potential for pulmonary deterioration in CF patients.Testing has not yet been conducted on ILD or IPF. I personally take probiotic supplementation by drinking Kefir, eating yogurt and sauerkraut. From my personal experience over the last 5 years I know doing this has all but stopped my GERD or acid reflux and hopefully tests and trials will give us the answer on using a more natural approach to controlling exacerbations as well as GERD.

A friend who has irritable bowel syndrome recommends something called Digestive Advantage. The brand is Schiff.

The more I read, the more it seems that results for different probiotics vary a lot from one person to another, so I guess if one doesn't work well there may be another one out there that works better.

I have been taking Renew Life Ultimate Flora 50 Billion for about a year. I am the Philadelphia group leader and was told by Betsy, one of the NY Support group leaders that it is the best. I get it on Amazon. Once a day, you get 90 for anywhere between 51-60 dollars. For some reason the price varies. I have not found 50 billion locally. IK told my ID Dr and he is recommending it to his patients.

I ask the pharmacist for the best probiotic for the antibiotic I am taking. I have also used Colistid a cholesterol med when I am taking Oral antibiotics if I notice diarrhea starting and it seems to stop diarrhea in its tracks. It was prescribed by my gastroenterologist. Interesting reading that probiotics may help Gerd also. I haven't noticed any difference between expensive 50 million live bacteria to generic provided by military pharmacy.

I eat a lot of yoghurt that has probiotics in it. However, I had no idea probiotics could help with this disease. I'm going to ask my Doc at my next appointment which is soon, and if he agrees I'm going to try taking more of it. Not sure why, but I just did not know about this?

Hi Tim,
It not really about helping with the disease, but offsetting some of the GI side effects that come with taking antibiotics.

That being said, I personally feel like there is a lot we don't know about probiotics, our gut bacteria and how it all affects overall well being!

Quick update to my original question....I've actually found that the digestion side effects are not bad for me, even on all three antibiotics, so I've switched from daily probiotic to maybe once/week.

The lack of stamina on the other hand, is a whole other issue!

when my youngest son (now 36) was born he was very sick and on antibiotics - while in the hospital they brought yogurt for me to feed him, i laughed and said you are kidding he is 4 weeks old so the doctor explained, antibiotics kill bacteria, good or bad so it is absolutely necessary to put the good bacteria back - just do not take the probiotics within several hours of the antibiotics - according to the latest thoughts, our immune system starts with our guts - you may want to talk to your doctor about this issue, mine tells me to make sure i take my probiotic every day

I am the support group leader for the Phila, Pa area. I have been taking RenewLife Extra Care Ultimate Flora Probiotics 50 BILLION 1 per day for a few years. I took 20 Billion for years, but was told by another leader that this is better. I order from Amazon. You get 90 for about 60 dollars.

Good Luck!
