One thing I found is that probiotics can be HSA eligible if your doctor will write a letter saying they are needed for your condition. My doctor wrote me a letter for this and now it is an eligible expense.

I don't take a supplement but I do eat greek yogurt nearly every morning for breakfast and have some cottage cheese (with various toppings) for a snack. Do you think that is enough Ksmiles123 or do you think a supplement is necessary? My gut health seems to be fine, but I was curious what you thought. :)

Christina,

I think your diet should be adequate for probiotics. Being on many antibiotics de the good and the bad bacteria. A probiotic will be assist in replenishing the good bacteria. Gut health affects brain health. They have learned so much more about the gut/ brain connection over the past few years.

I had a different experience with probiotics. I read a journal article where it stated that certain kinds of bacteria found in probiotics can help diminish the pooling of certain bad bacteria in lungs that lead to mucus secretions and lung infections. I used my bronchoscopy results to identify the two kinds of bad bacteria found in my lungs and matched it to the particular probiotic bacteria in certain brands that may hinder pooling and growth of my bad bacteria. I take one probiotic in the morning and a different probiotic in the afternoon to match the two different kinds of bad bacteria that I had. So far, it has reduced my cough and phlegm production by over 50 percent.

I should add that I had just been treated for a UTI where the antibiotic cleaned out all of the bacteria and my cough and phlegm was greatly reduced. I started the probiotics when my symptoms were greatly reduced because of the antibiotics

What were the bad bacteria in your lungs and the name of matching probiotics?

I am glad that you are feeling much better?

My particular "bad bacteria" was staphylococcus aureus and achromobacter. I found a February 2023 National Institute of Health article about how a particular probiotic, bacillus subtilis, helped block the staph bacteria from colonizing. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I found 3Biome, a probiotic that contained this particular strain. I also read that there were promising studies from the NIH and others on the benefits of lactobacillus rhamnosus to protect against respiratory tract pathogens and improve lung function. Culturelle Probiotics has this strain. As I said before, I started these two probiotics after a course of antibiotics for my UTI when the antibacterial antibiotic cleaned out all of the bacteria. I have done this for the past 4 months and have not yet returned to the prior level of cough and phlegm production. I am not trying to practice medicine, but just trying to let people know there might be an alternative. It has worked for me.
