Cannabis for Bronchiectasis?

In: General Discussion

Hello, I am looking for different treatment options for my mother who has Bronchietasis. I was wondering if anyone has tried cannabis (cbd oil, edibles, etc.) for their Bronchietasis? Obviously I feel like smoking cannabis would be counter productive but I was wondering if anyone had positive experiences with cbd oil for pain management, etc.? Thank you in advance

Jadew,

Hello! Welcome to the site. It is great that you are reaching out for your mom; I am sure that she is grateful for you on this day.

There is no published information on cannabis and NTM. I requested information on this topic at a recent conference ; top physicians did not know of sucesss stories at this point in time.

I really wish that edibles were an option for us since we cannot smoke.

I guess that we will just have to wait a while and see if a center can get research dollars for this subject area.

I will keep you posted if and when I hear anything

Jade,

I myself have been living with a diagnosis of Bronchietasis for the last 15 years or so. It started to seem to be progressing quite rapidly in my mind over the last couple of years, I was left in bed for weeks at a time with infections and up to 23 infections in a year. I had a number of symptoms that were getting worse some examples would be extremely painful spasms, weight loss i was severely underweight, i couldnt sleep through a night without waking up breathless, i was having terrible night sweats, exercise would leave me exhausted and breathless, it was making me depressed and anxious etc..

I researched and decided to try cannabis as i had read several medical papers on the subject and found there to be enough evidence to try it.

since using it i have had 1 infection in a year and a half, i gained 50 pounds putting me at a normal weight and bmi, im not breathless, no more painful spasms i do not cough up any mucus or blood anymore normally i had to do chest exercises to remove mucus from my lungs every morning, I sleep through the night, i have not had night sweats since, i am not depressed. and i feel healthy again. it has given me my life back. since using it i have not had the need for my inhalers or other medication and i have not needed to constantly be taking antibiotics. I thought it may have been a fluke and have tested if it was in actual fact the cannabis more than once. When i have stopped using it my normal symptoms would come back in about a week. I vaporize roughly three times a week before bed and it seems to do the trick. I have also tried eating cannabis however i find the most benifit comes from vaping as you feel a noticable difference in a matter of minutes as the airwais seem to loosen up and breathing becomes less of a hassle.

I have tried vaping also and think that it may be a benefit. I have tried some straight THC in vape form and it seems to be beneficial. I plan to pick some up over Christmas. Will report more after that.

Hi Sam thanks for sharing and these are incredible results congratulations! Would you mind sharing a bit more on the type of cannabis you use for this medical relief? It sounds like you are 'vaping' so i assume it is in oil form. It is Indica or Sativa or something else? Many thanks, Jay

Wouldn't this be a risk when driving of being fined for using it, even when it's for medicinal purposes?

Yes, I think smoking would be counterproductive but I know there are alternatives. I found this article that may have some insights. https://bronchiectasisnewstoday.com/2017/06/19/can...

SD is not legal yet here for medical marijuana. There are seems quite a few ppl that need it for different illness for pain. I think there are around 33 states that are legal for medical marijuana.

Their are edibles that work in the same way that smoking would , just less detrimental on the lungs. I would suggest that your mom see a doctor who deals specifically with cannabis as a treatment. . Gummy bears made with CBD oils might also be a alternative. But talk to a doctor to see if this would be ok for her.

CBD is supposed to assist w inflammation. It would be great if this could assist us on this journey. Many of us deal w inflammation throughout out bodies or in specific body parts.

I would try 1/2 of one the first time and see if helps you or makes you feel better. It can't hurt. It takes an hour or more to feel the effect. If you are real parinoid about them take 1/4 of one. But if you daughter gave them to you I wouldn't be concerned. I'm 76 so I've tried about everything. I vape a very small amount if I get depressed, but not very often. 😊

Well the state of SD did legalize it but as of a month ago they said its illegal due to some gray area. So now not sure about it. I don't think they know themselves. Well see how this goes. The stopped the agriculture farmers from growing hemp in SD also. Last week Iowa did pass it to grow hemp. So it goes on and on. A lot of the support groups I am in really a buzzing about CBD. A lot of the ones that are talking about it for pain, most say helps there anxiety and inflammation. As far as I know you cant get high on it.

Sut,

Thank you for your input. Yes, trying it at the lowest dose is good advice.

I did read that CBD oil interacts w some blood pressure medications.

It is wise to ask your pharmacist or a rep from the CBD company about interactions w existent medications.

I have found hemp extract so far to be effective in helping my symptoms. I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis in 2005. It has progressively gotten worse even though I eat a good diet and take numerous supplements. I currently have to be on antibiotics in the nebulizer every few months to control the mucous and have frequent and long bouts of pneumonia. I have just recently started taking a low dose of organic hemp extract drops (4 drops a day) and can't believe how much it is helping. I'm taking Hemp Extract 100 by Whitecedar from Amazon. It's reasonably priced. I haven't been taking it for very long, but I'm hopeful the good benefits will continue. Hopefully you have found this helpful for your mother. She is lucky to have a daughter who is trying to help her..

Hi This is my first time in this group.  I take one puff of homegrown marijuana per evening and I have no symptoms, in spite of my bronchiectasis diagnosis.

JN Holland - Just came across your post and would love to know how you are taking the marijuana - are you vaping it or smoking it in cigarette form?

THC mints ~3 mg work great and  I have rather extensive bronchiectasis both lungs. If I take a 3-5 mg mint with THCwithin 30 min I stop coughing, get less short of breath and can go out take a walk,I had been coughing up clear bubbly mucus a lot recently; I think it started when my doc took me off
azithromycin.  The inflammation and mucus got really bad.  These mints have a life saver.mcueva

Hi 😁

A little background. I've had kartagener's syndrome my whole life, but I was diagnosed with severe bronchiectasis 9 years ago after a bout with pneumonia. I was 30 years old. I've been on oxygen ever since.

After I heard the dr say there was no cure, just meds to manage the symptoms, I basically just shut down. I didn't leave the house much at all because I had to take a big tank. Sat around, because it was too much effort to do anything at all. After 5 years I had gained 50 pounds and was heaviest I'd ever been. 225 My lung capacity was 17%. The Dr told need to make an appointment with one of the medical centers that do lung transplants. Unfortunately there's none in the state I'm not real sure how I'm going to pull it off when I do it!

Sorry back to the answer...

I had been given some cannabis butter. I've since learned to make MCT oil to use sublingually. THC oil. I would take a small dose and then sit on the exercise bike. I was able to actually start exercising without the enormous weight hanging off my lungs!!! It reduced the uncomfortable pit in my chest (if you have severe mucus issues you know the pit I'm taking about!) I still had to go slow but I was able to start trying! Took a while but I was building up! 1 year later I was on the exercise bike 30-44 minutes every day!

Anyway 4 years later and I've lost the 50 pounds and 25 more! Have a (small) 6 pack!

I am a huge fan of this and feel like I need to help others in my situation. If you need advice you can message me on here I think. Try it!! Start with a low dose to see how you respond though and be safe
