Do you practice airway clearance techniques?
Hello! This question is one that I have based on a discussion from the Coffee Break time we had earlier this week.
Do you practice airway clearance techniques every day? If so, what works best for you? If not, would you share why you don't?
This is a safe place - no judgement, just trying to understand how different people manage their symptoms.
I found a long time ago that the best way to learn about an illness is to ask the people who live with it. My patients have taught me more over the years than any text book

Interesting question!
I have a vest which, I frankly use infrequently.
I had PT for my shoulder in the last few years and for sciatic and I discovered that laying on my back doing the exercises for these caused me to have a productive cough! When I feel I have mucus or sputum that I cannot move, I do these exercises and find I feel better and seems to work...that's just me but maybe could help others!

Di,
Thank you for sharing with the group. What type of exercises are you doing? Secretions often pool when lying flat. Every body is different- we must do what works best for us. Kati
I do vest airway clearance and huffing. Have to make sure I do my 7% saline before the vest to help. I am doing my floor peddler and my old clunker treadmill for exercise. Procrastinate way to much though.

Kandy ,
Pat yourself on the back for continuing to attempt to exercise. Many procrastinate- we must continuously remind ourselves of the physical and emotional benefits of exercise. Some form of exercise is needed now m than ever.:)
You are doing great, Kandy! I know it is easy to put exercise off, but it is really important. It is important to your overall strength and conditioning, but it also helps keep airways cleared out. Keep up the good work!
I need help in being able to post ?’s or answers.

Di ,This is great - thank you for taking time to answer. It helps me to know what works for different people because we work with so many individuals. You never know when your answer will be the one that might make it possible for me to help someone else :)
Yes I have a vest, nebulizer and aerobika. On a good day, I use all three together. On a bad day, I make excuses. I hope by posting this my future will include more good days than bad.
I found a good way to motivate myself to do the airway clearance is to reserve a favorite book for reading only while doing airway clearance.
John,
I do hope that you have more good days than bad days, going forward.
I do airway clearance twice a day. I would say in the 8 months since I started I have missed just 3 or 4 treatments. It makes that much of a difference. :)
Congratulations on being such a compliant patient. Yes, it certainly does make a difference. Missing 3-4 is nothing. You are in tright track
Originally I used an Aerobika once a day, but while traveling the Aerobika got damaged so I researched other methods that worked without any device and found Autogenic Drainage in different postural positions. From what I can tell in terms of quantity of mucus plugs it is as effective as clearing with the Aerobika. I was prescribed 7% Hypertonic Saline but it doesn't seem to help much and I think it caused some bleeding in my lungs so I only use it once a week now. I've considered trying the 3% but not sure if it would help.
