Does anyone inhale a saline solution using an aerobic and nebulizer.

My doctor at National Jewish prescribed a daily routine of inhaling a 7% saline solution using an aerobika flutter device and a nebulizer in order to clear my lungs of mucus. I was wondering if anyone else was doing this and how it was affecting them.

Hi Dee, my doctor at Mayo also recently prescribed a daily routine of a 7% saline solution using a nebulizer. I have not started the treatment because I am waiting to hear if I need to use my inhaler before the treatments as indicated in the instructions. Do you use an inhaler prior to your treatments? How effective are you finding the saline treatments in helping you expel mucus? Take care and I look forward to your experiences with this treatment.

Yes I take 2 puffs of Pro Air HFA before I start the treatment. I do expel mucus but I also have developed LERD (gerd but a constant clearing of the throat) and wondered if that is the result of using the saline solution.

@Dee, thank you for your response. I started with the constant clearing of the throat and constant phlegm about 6 months ago when my stomach and esophagus went through hell due to the antibiotics. Now it's a constant draining of my sinus and when I experience acid reflux, my esophagus. Sometimes it feels like I am drowning. I use Ocean saline nostril solution every day and drink lots of water throughout the day. I will start my saline treatments tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I definitely wish you luck. Those antibiotics can cause problems. Keep me informed on how it goes.

My pulmo has given me hypertonic saline 7% I think its wonderful stuff. I do mine twice a day one in morning after the brovana and one in afternoon either itself or after if I need a treatment of levelalbuterol. I have never used it with the aerobika but I do think the aerobika is the best air way clearance of all the others. I do have the vest airway clearance system but my own experiences I really didn't see where it helped.

Hi Kandy, I also use the smart vest but I don't cough up mucus. However, I keep at it because I figure it can't hurt. Anything that will keep me out of the hospital. Do you find since you have started your saline solution treatments, you are able to breathe easier and does it help with your energy levels?

I am not using the hypertonic saline at a regular schedule. If having more trouble then would use it 2 times a day. When I feel like its trying to come loose and up then I do a saline it does help right away. Yes it does make me feel like I can breathe easier as the mucus is plugging the airways thus getting it up helps. I been on 2 antibiotics now for diverticulitis so think that they could be helping also with what ever is in there. Never did get a clear sputum sample due to being on antibiotics a lot since Feb 15. My energy levels are not bad as it is. I just go with the flow I guess. I seem to go in spurts with coughing and trying to get the mucus up not continuing all the time.

Dee,

My doctor prescribed this treatment for me, using a nebulizer, too when I was having too many exacerbations too often. I tried it for a while, but the 7% solution was way too strong for my lungs and it made me cough a whole lot more and wore me out (tiredness). So, he suggested I use 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 saline (7%). That was milder and I was able to easily tolerate it a lot better. I have to confess that I gave it up after a month or so, however, as my cough and phlegm production did not seem to change much overall. I know that it helps some people, however, so it may be worth a try. When I used it I did it twice per day, morning and evening. I hope this helps.

Tim, I wonder if it would work better for you if you used it once a day instead of two?

Tim I noticed the last few times I used the hypertonic 7% saline I too was coughing also. I would take a drink water and did continue my treatment.

I know some ppl cant use the hypertonic saline as it sets the airways reacting to much.

Thank you for your response on your experience. I actually have been using it for two years. I find it works great to clear my lungs but not sure of the effect it might be having on my throat. I also am supposed to be using it twice a day but only do it once, because it is too exhausting.

Hi Donna, I'm happy to hear that. I hope the nebulizer will give good effect. I am going to buy a nebulizer and have a saline nebulizer too :)

I have been using the nebulizer and saline for 9 months now, because I don't cough. It does seem to help me get rid of some of the mucous in my lungs, especially in the morning. The Aerobika doesn't seem to do much of anything for me at all, so I stopped using it. Also, after recently catching a nasty cold, despite all my efforts to resist catching anything, I found the nebulizer use to be painful but very helpful in coughing up the nasty stuff. I think benefits are different for each of us.

Can you explain why he said to use aerobika with the neb? I have one but never used the neb with it but seen in the book that you can.

When you use the aerobika with the nebulizer and compressor you inhale the saline solution then exhale through the aerobika to get the flutter effect, thus getting two treatments in one.

Sounds good idea to me too. Will have to try that. Thanks Dee!!

Airway clearance effectiveness varies from individual to individual

Saline nebulizers do work for many to bring up mucous; The combo off nebulizers w aerobica or flutter works for many patients.

Additionally, guaffesin/ mucinex upon rising and in pm has worked for me.

You may not c obvious results w the vest; however, the movement of the mucous within the airways will lessen the chance of growth within these areas.

It is trial and error for so many patients.

Try for a few weeks or more to determine which is most effective for you in terms of expectorating sputum, overall energy.

All the best

I have been using the saline with the nebulizer and aerobika for 6 months. I also use albuterol in the solution. It has made so much difference in being able to expel the sputum that I am sure I will be using it for the rest of my life.
