Flying with Bronchiecstasis

My husband wants to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in Hawaii. We live on the East Coast. I have flown many times, and have had bronch for many years. I never knew this I had it til 2014. Well now I do clearence, no cough, have had exerbations, and antibiotics clear these up. My problem is I have had bleeds. I never know when. They always stop if I stay calm.

I hate to keep my husband from his dream, but wonder how safe I will be on a plane. We would be flying in stages with 2 day breaks. I only worry if plane pressure will hurt or sqeeze my lungs....I know it seems foolish to question, but my doctor just said to go...You'll be fine.

Thank you

The drs do have a flying test if your worried about that. Talk to your dr. I know they are germy and those of us with compromised immune systems need to wear a mask and have antibacterial with too.

Hello! What time of the year will you be traveling?

I assume the bleed is not excessive If your doc is not concerned with your bleeds?

Ksmiles123, we would be traveling in October. My grandaughter is getting married too, so we would like to fly to North Carolina also in fall. That is a 2 1/2 hour trip. I have had some bleeds, scary for me, and would alarm a plane full of people. This is a new Pulmonary guy and he doesn't see a problem. My old one didn't care at all, and I had half cup full... I am happy he isn't alarmed but I am afraid to go without documentation about my illness and that I am not contagious. I am also hoping for some kind of oxygen testing before I would go. I am at 97% room air.

Hello! I am glad that you have time between now and October to figure out tvis piece of the puzzle. Is your new doctor associated w a research center, experienced w NTM?

Does the bleed increase w dry heat, a specific time of the year?

Hi Ksmiles123,  My doctor is familiar with NTMs and I have been to National Jewish to rid myself of 2 of them..I have a 3rd but am not being treated.  I am thankful I am not..
It seems I bleed more from odors, like one time a 12 pack of Dove soap was all it took.  I opended it..Another was when my son-in-law burned something in thier oven.  It has happened right away, like with the odors, or when I am in bed!   So, I am not sure.  My old doctor would never give me antibiotics, ever, not once, or call me back.  This new one is more on the ball.  I always get antibiotics and they do help.  I have no idea really why it starts.....It's bad enough to worry about oxygen levels but bleeding just makes me want to stay home.  I just don't want to let my husband down because I am afraid.  If there is a bonifide reason for me not to fly,  then that different.

Hello! I am glad that you are being treated by NJC. What did your NJC doctor say about the bleeding? Have you seen an ENT doctor lately? It would be great to take the trip to HW.:

Ksmiles123,

I went to NJH in 2006, 07, 08.  After many 2 years of meds and IVs I was deemed cured of those two.  I was also told I had bronchiecstasis.  I had no symptoms until 2013.  I also found out then that I had MAC.  I have had bleds without any help.  I changed practices and am taken care of right away.  I have been to many ENTs as I have tinnitus also.  Not from meds....And profound hearing lose.
I am not sure what to do.  I hate to get over the ocean and have a bleed.  I am hoping my doctor can do something.  I am hoping too, that I can fly to see my granddaughter get married.

yes it would be great.  We went on 25th 40th and this would be so special, but I don't want to ruin it by getting sick on the plane.  This is hard to figure out.

Cathlin, I understand your concern and feeling torn between traveling a long distance on plane and taking care of yourself. I also have had 5 episodes of coughing up blood over the past 2 years. I was dx with bronchiectasis in 2017 and in 2019 was dx with NTM/MAC. . Like you, the bleeding is not predictable so it scares me. I often have bleeding episodes soon after traveling on a plane. About 3 months ago a pulmonologist started me on airway clearance program 2x day. I also wear special mask if around dust, potting soil etc. and would wear one if flying. She is hoping the program will reduce inflammation and thus < bleeding. Do you have a therapeutic program to help < bleeding and special mask for NTM/ bronchiectasis?

@Jesse

Yes, It is never pedictable, but it is so different from clearance, you know right away what is happening.
I also do clearance and wear a mask when dusting, cleaning liter box,  etc...I have given up gardening all together.  I also try to nevr be around scented candles, fireplaces, or pits, any smoke at all.  Perfumes are also not good for me.  Or if I catch a cold.
Did doctor explain why you had bled after flying?  Was it germs, or does the air pressure in plane do something to hurt your lungs? My real worry is bleeding while on a flight, but i guess no one could Tell me that.  Pulmonary doctor did say that he would put me on antibiotics before trip and to take on the way home.  Maybe that would help inflammation.  I am not sure.

Hello,

I've traveled many places and on a cruise with my Bronchiectasis and Tracheobronchomalacia. I've only had an issue with bleeding when I cough so hard, which seemed I was more concerned than my doctors. Point blank, ask your pulmonologist if it is safe for traveling and what happens if you get a bleed.

My vest fits nicely in the stewards closet and is considered the same as oxygen when it comes to traveling. It is not charged for baggage and we do not as such. It is carried on. I also nebulizer machine with the liquid meds with me. Also, take along my little acapella device.
