Flying with Bronchiecstasis
My husband wants to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in Hawaii. We live on the East Coast. I have flown many times, and have had bronch for many years. I never knew this I had it til 2014. Well now I do clearence, no cough, have had exerbations, and antibiotics clear these up. My problem is I have had bleeds. I never know when. They always stop if I stay calm.
I hate to keep my husband from his dream, but wonder how safe I will be on a plane. We would be flying in stages with 2 day breaks. I only worry if plane pressure will hurt or sqeeze my lungs....I know it seems foolish to question, but my doctor just said to go...You'll be fine.
Thank you

The drs do have a flying test if your worried about that. Talk to your dr. I know they are germy and those of us with compromised immune systems need to wear a mask and have antibacterial with too.
Hello! What time of the year will you be traveling?
I assume the bleed is not excessive If your doc is not concerned with your bleeds?
Ksmiles123, we would be traveling in October. My grandaughter is getting married too, so we would like to fly to North Carolina also in fall. That is a 2 1/2 hour trip. I have had some bleeds, scary for me, and would alarm a plane full of people. This is a new Pulmonary guy and he doesn't see a problem. My old one didn't care at all, and I had half cup full... I am happy he isn't alarmed but I am afraid to go without documentation about my illness and that I am not contagious. I am also hoping for some kind of oxygen testing before I would go. I am at 97% room air.
Hello! I am glad that you have time between now and October to figure out tvis piece of the puzzle. Is your new doctor associated w a research center, experienced w NTM?
Does the bleed increase w dry heat, a specific time of the year?

Hello! I am glad that you are being treated by NJC. What did your NJC doctor say about the bleeding? Have you seen an ENT doctor lately? It would be great to take the trip to HW.:

Hello,
I've traveled many places and on a cruise with my Bronchiectasis and Tracheobronchomalacia. I've only had an issue with bleeding when I cough so hard, which seemed I was more concerned than my doctors. Point blank, ask your pulmonologist if it is safe for traveling and what happens if you get a bleed.
My vest fits nicely in the stewards closet and is considered the same as oxygen when it comes to traveling. It is not charged for baggage and we do not as such. It is carried on. I also nebulizer machine with the liquid meds with me. Also, take along my little acapella device.
