I'm wondering if it is helpful to run a humidifier while sleeping to aid in better sleep? If so, warm or cool mist? Only distilled water?

Hello! Welcome to the site. No, it is not wise to use a humidifier; they have found NTM in these devices. Open a window? Place a pot of water under your bed?

Dr J Falkinham has done a lot of research in this area

Yes my allergist years ago said to get rid of my humidifier due to mold and bacteria growth in them. I put a dish of water in my bedroom during the dry winter months.
