Has anyone tried N-A-C or Quercetin (two different OTC supplement) to reduce mucus production?

Good morning! There was an article posted a while back that talked about NAC and Bronchiectasis, it may be something helpful with asking your doctor if it may be right for you.

Jay,

Hello! I have never used either. I have read some success stories by patients. Individual bodies, metabolism are all different - what works for one may not touch another. Keep us posted

Hi Jay,

I have bronchiectasis. I did use N-A-C (N-Acetylcysteine) in the past. A pulmonologist prescribed it to me. This drug made my mucus became less sticky and somehow I also feel that this drug made my mucus became too much. It was just my experience. I don’t use this drug at the moment. This drug came in a form of capsule and also in a form of effervescent which can be dissolved in a glass of water.

Quercetin as a supplement is something but I never take. Quercetin can be found in food and has good effect for our health.

I have used NAC for years for antitoxins my pulmo asked me if I heard of it said I was taking it he said double my dose.  If you look up NAC it helps a lot of things.  i do have asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and PH.

@Kandy thanks.  What is the dose that you take.? you mentioned he said to double your does.  i've been taking 1 tab of 600mg twice a day morning and evening.  so far less than one week into it so too early to tell.  curious though about your dosage.  thanks

1200 mg should split it 600 mg twice a day.

I have taken it even before I learned that I had bronchiectasis.  I haven't taken it since my diagnosis close to a month ago.   But I wasn't taking 1200 - only 600 normally. I did read where it's best to take on an empty stomach. I didn't really notice much of a change but think I'll start taking it again.

@brandon thanks for the article which is very helpful since i did not see this particular one linking directly bronchiectasis and N-A-C.  i did ask my doctor who said that he knows some people use it and report success but that according to him there is no medical proof that suggests it works (which is diff from what i see in this article).  he said he was comfortable with me trying it since it could only help and not hurt.  fingers crossed....  i will report back in a month.

Hi Jay

I just started using NAC a week ago. I'm hoping it will cut down on the sputum. It seems if I lay down and clear the sputum out at noon, I am ok for about 6 hrs. I also will report back in a month with results.

I read an article about the long term effect of acetylcysteine for bronchiectasis. Here is the link.

Wow Thanks Made!  This is a really good article.  I was going on an off N-A-C because my doctor in NYC and also the doctors I met at National Jewish in Denver seemed amused by the notion that it would work, but I think this research suggests that it is def worth taking!  Thanks again for sharing, Jay

I find it works well short term when nebulized. I have it to add to my albuterol when I'm having a bad morning. I am beginning to get sensitive to sulfites. I already have a sulfa allergy so the oral form in my case would not be a good idea, but does look promising for some people.

Thanks for the updated info on this guys!

I have been on NAC in pill form 600 MG for 2 months now. While I can't say I have had any reduction in sputum, I can say i've had no exaserbations or problems taking it. So i'll continue. Thanks for all the input on this.

Hi Gumby. That's good. I also have been taking NAC daily since this year. I hope that we can get the benefit of NAC.

my infectious disease doc started me on NAC when I started NTM treatment with initial diagnosis. I do have retained secretions I didn’t have initially but it may be worse without the NAC? but don’t know for sure. I was looking into Quercetin but haven’t tried it or asked the doc about it. Curious to know more about that.

Jay,

Hello! Welcome to the site. I tried NAC a few years ago, it didn’t agree with me. I do take quercetin, it has anti inflammatory properties which serve many different body parts. I don’t see anything harmful with quercetin. I recommend always trying the better brands when you take supplements, the less chemicals, fillers the better they are for you. Keep us posted

Quercetin gives me a headache , even in smaller doses. I did take it for almost a year and a half and stopped when I was vaccinated.

I have taken both NAC and Quercitin. NAC was awhile ago and don't remember any particular benefit, although I have read that it can reduce exacerbations. I do get a lot of benefit from Quercitin that helps a lot with inflammation and tight breathing. However, I tried different brands but found that only the NOW brand of Quercitin with Bromelain worked for me.
