I believe blood should not be drawn from a PICC line?

When we have a PICC line and have NTM and or abscessus, can blood be drawn from the PICC line or should we insist on getting blood drawn from the other arm?

And why is it considered dangerous? Infection?

Any puncture site has potential for an infection. Hopefully, they can draw blood from your PICC line. Did they say that they could not for some reason?

I'm asking on behalf of, but I read and heard on a zoom meeting once that you should be adamant in asking for the blood to be drawn from the other arm.  I also read John T's notes and he suggests that as well.  I told someone else when they asked so now I'm just trying to validate my response to them.

Hi Sue,

I have had some clinics draw blood from my picc line, then do the weekly bandage change. Other clinics have said absolutely not, and they draw blood from my other arm.

Suepink,

This is a great question that hasn’t been raised before. We will research further to find out what is the best practice.

A Picc line used for meds and saline only deters clogging.

It has been my experience that HCPs don't like to use it for blood draws. Reason #1: Any time you tap into a PICC line puts it at risk for infection. Reason #2: They have to use a vacuum or syringe to pull blood from the PICC. This could cause damage to the line. They try to eliminate any unnecessary use of the PICC other than medication infusion.
