Ideas about foul odor?
The cough has had a foul odor for a while now. The doctors say that is normal and what I have dead says it is. Does anyone have any ideas about dealing with it day to day? I don't smell it, but those around me do.

HelloJ,
Welcome to the site. I assume you’re using mouthwash. Do you have an electric toothbrush? Do you like throat lozengers? Are you also being followed by a gastroenterologist?

Hello! Are you doing airway clearance twice a day to assist getting the mucus up and out? Do you take mucinex?
I use 7% saline or mucomyst alternate these and do the vest airway clearance every day. If need use the aerobika also.

HI Jwarner. I have definitely heard of this. I used to work in a CF clinic, and many of those patients would get pseudomonas which has a foul odor. It would cause them to be very self-conscious about it. I like the suggestions above... Mint, mouthwash, (no more than brushing 3 times a day because you don't want to start damaging the enamel of your teeth), and airway clearance.
I think airway clearance will tend to be the most beneficial. You essentially need to clear the foul-smelling mucus from your lungs. I would be very consistent with the routine. Also, drink lots and lots of water to help thin the mucus and get it up! Until the mucus is adequately cleared, carry mints with you when you are with friends and family.
Something that can be helpful with mouth odor is to spend a good amount of time brushing your tongue in addition to your teeth and gums. Such good ideas here. I hope they help you!
Kristen,
Great suggestion. I forgot about the silver wire tongue cleaner which I purchased years ago. I haven’t used it in awhile but did use it when I was on a lot of antibiotics.
