Just learned that I have tested positive for MAC again. I went through antibiotic treatment for 11 months in 2018. I have felt good until I had COVID in July of 2022. During COVID I developed a cough. Now MAC . My question for anyone who was treated for MAC just to have it come back. What was your treatment the second time?

DK ,

I am so sorry to read about your reoccurrence. It is such a frustrating experience after working so hard for two years to get better….

Many patients are treated with the same repeat of medications but only your doctor can decide what the best treatment plan is for you.
I went through this and understand how difficult this can be to accept the reoccurrence. We are here to support you.

DK,

I am sure that they want to repeat the sputum culture again considering any treatment plan. Expert doctors want several sputum cultures before starting multiple antibiotics.

Hi DK. I was chatting with a physician last summer and he told me that once someone has MAC there is a 50% chance they could acquire it again. (Not sure where this statistic is found, but it let me that reinfection can be likely.) For now the treatment seems to be the same process (especially since it has been so long since you had MAC). Keep us posted on how things go with your treatment. We are here for you!
