It is appearing more and more likely that MAI treatment is necessary and can no longer be avoided. How is it administered? Are these pills taken at home or an intravenous application? How often if intravenous? Or is it different for each individual?

Wendy,

It is different for each patient. The treatment is based on the specific Mycobacteria. Most patients start with oral antibiotics. IV antibiotics can follow for some patients, not all.

We are here to support you on this journey. There is a lot of available information now online which was not available a decade ago

I was diagnosed with MAI and was told National Jewish will require a 5 day stay for infusions and to determine what meds I can tolerate. When I look up the normal antibiotic protocol for MAI all the meds are classified as oral not IV so I am confused.

My pulmonary doctor is against the treatment because of the harshness of the drugs and my adverse reaction to every drug I as much as look at. I also have aspergillus requiring anti-fungals. These drugs are no picnic either. I've been avoiding treatments for these two diseases for several years and settling for consistent monitoring by my infectious disease doctor. He's been on a wait and see with me, but with worsening congestion/coughs and ER runs now have me on the fence. Quality versus quantity of life.

Wendy,

Hello! Have you seen a specialist at one of the top NTM centers?

I was not one for pushing drug therapy either; however, there comes a time when treatments may be necessary to improve quality of life. Please keep us posted
