NTM risk to others
My niece will soon be getting a bone marrow transplant. I realize that my NTM is not considered infectious to others, but are there any exceptions? I would like to help with her post-transplant care, but that is when she is most vulnerable to infection. Is she at risk of getting NTM from me when she is so immunosuppressed?

Hello! I understand that you want to help your niece but you must think about your own health as well. Respiratory patients are more vulnerable to other lung infections. Will you be caring for her in the hospital or at home? If you should become ill, then who would be caring for her? NTM is not documented to be contagious within families. Your niece is lucky to have a great aunt.

Kat,
Hello! I have two nieces and would want to do the same for them. However, it may be risky since she will be in and out if the hospital, doctors offices . I am sure that the center where she will go for treatment will maintain the highest infection control precautions- however, it is easy to be exposed to germs when you are traveling in and out of a hospital, doctor offices. I have been never been a total germophobe , but I am concerned now more than ever with Covid, the flu, etc.
I don’t know your medical history, # of infections, type of infections, cat scan results, etc. I would advise to discuss with the doctor who knows your case the most. Wishing you both the very best in the months ahead. Katie
