Re: Clofazamine

Hi everyone, my MAC is back for the third time and my local doc is talking to National Jewish about adding Clofazamine to my other 3 meds. It really looks scary the way it turns your skin colors 75-100% of the time. Has anyone else taken this. Are there patches of color or does it just turn all your skin a weird color. I still work part time with the public and volunteer at an animal shelter and I fear I will be confined to indoors. I sure wish I could find some pictures online of what my skin might possibly look like, but so far no luck.

Hi KC,

I've had MAC for about 4 years now and take the 3 popular meds. I started taking the Clofazimine in the middle of January 2020 but only 50mg. I just saw my Doctor for followup last week and she increased my dose to 100mg, which as I understand is the usual dose. So far, I have no discoloration of my skin and I haven't had any side effects. My Doctor told me she has a male patient on Clofazimine and his skin looks like he was on vacation in Hawaii, however I do not know how long he has been on the medicine. I will let you know when my skin appears to change color... hopefully to a nice Brazilian tan. LOL! Let us know how you do on the Clofazimine. Thanks

I took clofazimine 4 years ago and had no problems. My skin did turn a slight orange but most people thought I had been to the islands! It does go away and then you kind of miss being tan. I did not have any stomach or mouth issues. All in all, it was an easy drug for me. I had MAC for 10 years and this was the key to killing it. Well worth it!

I took 100 mg for 6 months before I started noticing the tanning. Then my dose was cut to 50 mg for another 6 months. I am allergic to a lot of the other meds so there were not many options to choose from I am getting ready to start another round of it because I now have M. Masseliense.. Good luck!

Thank you and good luck.  It's so interesting that when MAC comes back it can come back in a different form. Mine too went to intracellular which was slightly different than before.  Hang in there.

Hi KC,

I know this response is late, but maybe it will still be helpful. I have been on Clofazimine twice, each time for a year. My skin darkened after about three months and stayed dark until about three months after I stopped taking it. I also had dry and itchy skin, particularly on my lower legs. Neither of these were bad enough to stop taking the medicine.
