Severe Long Term Bronchiectasis
I was diagnosed in the 80's, and have been in the hospital for flare ups, more times than I can count. I almost never feel well, but continue to carry on as tho I am . I think my question might be: How do others with this disease deal with the copious amounts of phlegm they constantly cough up, in public? Like... at the gym?? My pulmonologist feels that exercise is vital.

MaryLyn,
Hello! Welcome to the site. Yes, exercise is so important for us. Have you used hypertonic saline and or mucinex? Yes, getting used to covering your mouth, expectorating sputum discretely may take awhile. It is in your best interest to liquidfy the secretions with plenty of water get the excessive mucous out of your system.
Hello MaryLyn welcome to the group. Yes rehab is one good way to exercise if you have one in your area. Keep moving is very important for us with lung diseases. I use hypertonic saline 7% have some 3 I use also. Its a saver for me. I did have the vest but didn't work for me as it did with some ppl. There are many hand held instruments that help with the mucus. Flutter, Acappela and the Aerobika are great to use. Lots of water is a must.
