What suggestions do you have for managing my Bronchiectasis?

Recently diagnosed after ten years of “chronic bronchitis.” Prednisone and antibiotics knocked it out until last two years. My recent blood work shows compromised immune system, probably from me taking too much prednisone over last two years. Sputum being cultured now so we can see what we are dealing with...and hopefully get right antibiotic. On Symbicort twice daily, albuterol neb twice daily, Ibuprofen 800 mgs 4x daily, and trying to clear lungs...techniques that work much appreciated. Hard to sleep and breathless much of time with no fever and fairly good lung function tests. Had been fairly active till recently walking three miles per day and some weights till recently...too much coughing and hacking at gym.

Any suggestions would be appreciated and good luck to all in your fight with this condition!!

Greg,

Hello! You will have a better idea of the appropriate treatment plan once you get your sputum cultures back. When will get the results?

Do you take mucinex? Motrin 800, 4x a day is a lot of Motrin, just concerned w stomach issues due to high dosage. Have you tried melatonin?

Keep us posted. All the very best

Thanks for info Ksmiles!

I take Mucinex in morning but no Melatonin. I have tried Ibuprofen for the antiinflamatory properties. Does it help? If not, then perhaps it is not worth risk to gut and other organs.

Traveling back to Cincinnati now...sputum results should be avaikable today. Once conpleted and bacteria identified, is it likely that the mucous production will be minimized once the proper antibiotic is identified? If so, then how long for antibiotic to do the job?

Thanks again young lady!

Hello! You are most welcome! I don’t think the Motrin will really assist w overall lung inflammation. I would be really concerned about gastrointestinal issues , reflux, w that high dosage .

Glad that you are getting your results today; please keep us posted.

The timeframe for effectiveness varies.... it can take up to several months to really start to feel the results. However, there is HOPE!!

Many have gotten to the other side and are doing well

Thanks much KAmiles for your encouraging words! I am by nature and optimist and will always be looking for the “light at the end of the tunnel”...and if it is a train, then I will hop aboard

Greg,

So glad that you are an optimist. Being an optimist or somehow working on a more positive attitude is so very important when dealing with a chronic disorder.

My hospital stay in Sept with a copd coach made this regiment for me and it does work. Getting up do Nebulizer xopenex, then hypertonic saline 7 % then on the Hil Rom vest airway clearance system 20 min. Then back to the nebulizer doing brovana, then I do my spiriva respimat inhaler.then budnesonide and finally Flovent HFA. It does take awhile as you can see but it does work.I never thought of doing the xopenex first like that.

Forgot the zpak 3 days a week has helped a lot. Preventing infections and it does help with inflammation.

Thanks much Kandy for your time and sharing what works for you! It must take over an hour, but if it works, then its time well invested!

Hav you done sputum analysis to determine the specific virus that you are fighting?

Thanks again!
