dealing with side effects of rifampin

I am going to be starting treatment for NTM and bronchiectasis very soon and I am very concerned about the side effects of the meds, particularly rifampin. Can anyone let me know how you dealt with the effects of discoloration of body fluids and how they might stain clothing? I don't want to ruin good clothing from perspiration. I've read plenty on the side effects of all the meds but nothing about how to avoid, if possible, the staining effects. Thanks so much

Kelly,

Hello! Welcome to the site. I did not stain clothing while I was on rifampin years ago; however, we all metabolize / excrete drugs differently based on our genetic makeup. Below are articles on the subject matter. Please keep us posted. Wishing you the best as you start the medications.

Hello again,

While searching, I found a list of the many drugs that can possibly stain our clothes; I had no idea that there were so many .

Hi! When I was on rifampin my urine became reddish in colour. I didn't feel any other side effects such as nausea or vomitting.

Jessica here-

I am currently taking rifampin, along with the two other antibiotics and inhale Arikayce for M.A.I. lung infection.

I have reddish/orange urine due to the rifampin so wear a pad on the days that I take the drugs. I do have stomach problems also but am not sure if it is from the rifampin, ethambutol or azithromycin. Imodium helps me when my stomach rebels. During a former two year treatment for M.A.I.,with only the three antibiotics drugs, I had regular blood draws and saw a kidney doc to keep on eye on the possible effects of rifampin. Stomach issues were the most prominent. No kidney damage then and there never was any discoloration in the form of perspiration.

Hope this helps.

No red perspiration here, either. Just orange urine. It's shocking to see at first, but you get used to it!

Merry,

Yes, we can get used to the discolored urine.... we are safe as long as the liver enzymes stay within the normal range.
