I dont know that answer either but I do the same saline when having trouble coughing it up. Do twice a day then. Have you tried the aerobika hand held insturment as the flutter and the acapella? I have the vest airway clearing device but I dont see where it does any good. Huffing have you tried that to get it out??

I have an origional flutter valve, acapella, and aerobika as well as the Smart Vest. What I find most helpful is hands on chest percussion, but can only get that while in the hospital. No agency does it in the home any more. The Vest wasn't helping much till I turned it up to it's highest setting: I turned the dial all the way to 100, and I change position often while doing the vest.

I have tried huffing, but that doesn't do much. As for Aerobika, I stopped using that because it didn't do anything at all to help me. My doctor suggested the vest, but I hate to get another "device" that doesn't really do much and may actually harm my lungs. Thanks for your response, Kandy.

I also have the vest and didnt think did much good. I have seen on groups of FB that some ppl did get good results from the vest. Again we are all different and things work better for some and not others. The saline is to loosen the mucus to cough it up and out. Its done more for me than anything else has.

the same for me - vest set off pain from other issues and did not seem to help get the mucus up -- saline is the only thing that seems to help me - good luck

bunnyhop the saline is a life saver tried the 3% 9% and finally my pulmo likes the 7% and that works best. Some ppl can't use it straight as riles up the airways but I get along fine with it. Some do mix it with there albeterol too to prevent the riling up airways.

Same here. I used the Vest for a year. Minimal results. 3% saline via nebulizer twice daily is the answer for lung clearance for me. The cost is reasonable. No side effects and, if needed, I can combine it with an albuterol treatment.

i have the 7% and 3 switch off depending how bad I am. My pulmo liked the 7% the best. I think apple cider vinegar tsp in glass of water seems to help also. That's just me.

Hello :) my cough is productive, so I cough many times a day. Chest percussion is so helpful for me. Doing yoga also makes me really want to cough mucus. I don't have flutter/acapella device and I don't have the vest.

Chest percussion (Chest PT) is an activity to tap our chest with cupped hand, in order to give some vibration to mucus. Here is the video that teach me how to do Chest PT.

I know in 06 they rubbed this round instrument on my back was percussion we called it the tractor. I had strep pneumonia at that time and we couldn\t get the gunk to move for nothing. I think it finally dried up due to antibiotics and a lot of steroids. I didn't have bronchiectasis that time as far as I know was just found 2014 but I do wonder if I had it longer no one seen it. Had a lax pulmo at that time.

I am 80 years and have had Bronchiectasis for 57 years. Instead of using the VEST my Pulmonologist has me using a mucus extractor. It's also known as an insuffalator/exsuffalator. It is much easier than huffing or using a flutter valve. I avoid antibiotics but nebulize Tobramycin to head off infections. I also use a Homedics massager so I can do percussion myself.

I thought Tobrimycin was for Pseudomonas aeruginosa? assume you have that too, then? I do have bronchiectasis plus Pseudomans and MAC?NTM but Yes, it is horribly expensive and because I'm Medicare age 73 Medicare would have put me in the coverage gap (donut hole) straign away and itwas only March, so I decided to pass on it even though I have high colonization of P. aeruginosa. There is no cheaper alternative as of this time.

Modjaje,

Hello! Yes, tobramcycin is specifically for pseudomonas. TOBI is a very expensive drug which sadly put you in the donut hole so early in the year.

Please check out the Novartis site to check for financial assistance programs.

The 7% NS isn’t cheap,?$80.00, don’t remember the exact price but it does assist in breaking up the sputum.

Please keep us posted.

My pulmonologist says it's not how much mucus you get up but that you are cleaning your lungs and making it more difficult for bacteria to take hold. It's a hygiene thing for your lungs
